AKA hardy orange, trifoliate orange

Poncirus trifoliata is a great shrub to have for the adventurous backyard gardener or the homesteader focused on self-resiliance. Yes, it produces citrus in regions as cold as zone 5 (0 degrees F!) in November. These golf ball size sour lemons are slightly fuzzy and have a more floral flavor than a store bought lemon.

Growing conditions: Easy to grow. Thrives in wide range of soil, climates and rainfall areas.

Size at maturity: 8-10’

Uses: Vitamin C in the winter! I find them delicious in lemonade, marmalade, lemon curd, on crepes…use as you would a lemon! The shrub is thorny and can be used as a hedgerow species.

USDA hardiness zones: as cold as zone 5
