Witch Hazel

Hamamelis virginiana is a highly-valued shrub native to eastern USA. It is perhaps best known for its soothing and healing effects on our skin. It is a savvy inclusion to a winter garden as it blooms in the late autumn. We have a wild patch down by our creek here in Kentucky and its bright yellow ribbon-like flowers are a nice burst of color through December and even January sometimes.

Growing conditions: Easy to grow in our region, tolerant of many conditions. Tends to grow most readily on edges of streams and forests.

Size at maturity: 15-20’

Uses: Leaves and bark can be used to make teas and ointments beneficial for the skin, as an anti-inflammatory and the best cure for hemorrhoids. A general cleanser and skin tonic.
