American Plum

Prunus americana is a small, deciduous, single trunk tree or multi-stemmed shrub which can form thickets. Prunes well and produces beautiful blossoms early in season.

Growing conditions: It is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Grows in rocky or sandy soils in woodlands, pastures, abandoned farms, streams and hedgerows — everywhere!

Size at maturity: 15’-20’

Uses: Perhaps the most obvious use (and why we are offering it here) is as rootstock for plum cultivars to be grafted on. Can also be used as a riparian buffer to prevent erosion, wildlife habitat or windbreak.
