Balaton tart cherry on Mahaleb
For me, Balaton is a dream cherry. It is a Morello cherry (dark skin, dark flesh) and is a sour cherry with high sugar content and firm flesh, making it palatable for fresh eating if left on the tree to fully ripen. This is the national cherry of Hungary, chosen among all sour cherries as the best by the post WWII Communist government. Will not tolerate wet feet.

Pollination: Self-fertile, although it is seen that crops are more regular with the presence of a sweet cherry.
