Plant Sanctuary Network
We are a proud member of the Botanical Sanctuary Network from the United Plant Savers - a non-profit organization based in OH, whose goal is to promote the preservation of native North American medicinal plants.
At Sylvatica Forest Farm we care about stewarding the land in right relationship and part of our mission is to preserve the precious native woodland medicinal species that are threatened and endangered due to over-harvesting or loss of habitat.
Through propagating the existing populations on our property to planting new ones, we hope to learn, educate and help preserve this national treasure. We hope that in the future we can be able to sustainably harvest and process this herbs to be able to offer them in our Apothecary.
The market for woodland medicinals is growing globally and most of the plants grown in the USA are exported to Asia, when we import most of the same medicine we use here. It seems like a shift in perspective is needed for a more sustainable and resilient future for both us humand and for the plants, not to mention the ecological impact that these transactions have in the ecological system. What I believe we need in Appalachia is more awareness, more people involved, more people producing and more places for processing these herbs into products.
Through educating the local community via workshops and getting more people involved, we hope to bring this traditional livelihood to a place of resilience and with a long term conservation prespective.
